"Delirium Tremens" is Latin for "tremors caused by alcohol intoxication." The label, drawn by a student who was training at the brewery, features a pink elephant, which is considered a symbol of happiness, along with several other animals. The meaning behind this is that, when you drink it, hallucinations appear in the order of an elephant, a crocodile, a dragon, and a bird. It was first brewed in 1988 at the request of the Italian Prime Minister, who was staying in Belgium at the time, and was initially exported only to Italy.
This is actually my second time trying this beer. If I remember correctly, the first time was at a small beer garden amidst the skyscrapers in Shinjuku. Even then, I was struck by its 'deceptively non-alcoholic' ease of drinking and the balance provided by its sweetness, making me think of it as a 'Beer Garden Lover Killer?' instead of a ladykiller cocktail. It's that easy to drink. It could be a 'secret weapon' for anyone who wants their partner to fall asleep quickly (though it's not cheap being an imported beer). For the drinking enthusiasts and beer lovers, it's a divisive flavor—some might say 'too sweet!' while others might think 'but that's what's great about it!' If you're curious, give it a try.
Yes, this beer is indeed strong and sweet [At Home]
Yes, it’s sweet and easy to drink (by a drinker’s standards). Dangerous, but maybe that’s a good thing.
