In the summer of 2024, I attended the Whisky Festival held at the Osanbashi Hall in Yokohama, where I sampled Kameda Distillery’s “Newborn Non-Peated.” I remember thinking, “I really like this flavor. This one could turn into something amazing in the future.” So I bought a small 200ml bottle at the venue to drink at home (though I remember it wasn’t exactly cheap).
Back then, I thought, “If this whisky matures for years, it’s going to be really good.” And tasting this whisky now, it feels like that prediction was spot on. The only downside is that it’s a bit too expensive for a casual home-drinking bottle.
By the way, I wondered why Kameda Distillery ended up calling their brand “OHTANI WHISKY.” I thought maybe they were riding on the fame of Shohei Ohtani, the Major League superstar—but no, it turns out the owner’s surname is actually Ohtani. Still, it’s hard not to think they’re intentionally aiming for that association (lol). Well, it tastes great, so I guess I can’t complain.
